New York State Energy Research and Development Authority

New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) offers incentives to those looking to make their home more energy efficient and provides similar services to the commercial and industrial sector. NYSERDA also offers an incentive for solar and wind installations.

In 2000, New York enacted the Green Building Tax Credit for business and personal income taxpayers, extending it in 2005 after the initial period expired.  The incentive applies to owners and tenants of eligible buildings and tenant spaces which meet certain "green" standards and can be applied against corporate taxes, personal income, insurance corporation taxes and banking corporation taxes.  The original law provided for $25 million in credit certificates; the 2005 legislation added another $25 million. 

Statute §487-a, the Energy Conservation Improvements Property Tax Exemption, allows for an exemption from taxation of conservation improvements to residential properties of single-family to four-family households.  "Conservation improvements" relates to various equipment and measures, but the statute also states that any conservation-related state or federal tax credit or deduction is exempt from New York's property tax under this statute.
